Taiping Houkui from superior mountain fields carries an elegant and delicate orchid fragrance. Unlike the high aroma of pan-fried green teas, its scent is subtle and infused into the tea liquor.

While Chinese tea boasts the greatest variety of green teas, the Anhui region's spring buds are notably late. After the busy farming season in the Sichuan-Guizhou and Jiangsu-Zhejiang areas, Anhui's representative famous teas, like Lu'an Guapian and Taiping Houkui, are picked just before Grain Rain.

Besides the colder temperatures of the inner mountain environments, another key reason is that premium Anhui green teas are made from the fresh leaves of local native sexual reproduction population varieties. Compared to the widely cultivated, early-sprouting clonal varieties, these population varieties bud later. This is also why teas made from population varieties have richer inner quality, greater endurance to multiple infusions, and a smooth, fine texture with a subtle, elegant aroma.

【Core Origin】

This batch of Taiping Houkui is produced in the core origin: Houkeng Village, Xinming Township, Huangshan District, Huangshan City, Anhui Province. The altitude is around 650 meters. The tea plant variety is the Shidaye cultivar, which belongs to the local population variety (native variety). It is made using the traditional manual "Niejian" (pinching and shaping) technique.

【Name Origin】

  • "Taiping" comes from the old name of Huangshan District, Taiping County.
  • "Hou" comes from the core production area, Houkeng Village.
  • "Kui" comes from the name of its creator, Wang Kuicheng, and also implies "the best" or "supreme" in quality.

【"Niejian" Craftsmanship】

Taiping Houkui has large leaves, different from small-leaf green teas like Longjing or Maojian. It is picked before Grain Rain, consisting of one bud and two to three opened leaves. After fixation (kill-green), each tea leaf is carefully straightened by hand. The bud, leaf, and stem are pinched together tightly, given a slight twist, and then pinched again – each individual leaf undergoes this manual "pinching and shaping" process.

After being shaped through pinching, the leaves are laid flat on wire mesh and then rolled and pressed to form flat, slender strips with a distinctive mesh pattern. Finally, they are dried over charcoal fire. Therefore, in terms of processing, it belongs to the baked green tea category.

🍵 Brewing Suggestions】

The gentle floral aroma doesn't require rinsing; no need to rinse the tea.

🍃 Simple Cup Brewing: Use 5-10 strips (approx. 2-3g). Leave about one-quarter of the water for replenishing. The subtle orchid fragrance emerges clearly. The tea liquor is clear, bright, and jade-green. Sipping it reveals a delicate and elegant taste with a light, creamy sweetness. The aroma is fully integrated into the water, accompanied by a "rock melody" or mineral note that only teas from excellent ecosystems can present.

🍃 Gaiwan Brewing (approx. 130ml): Use 4g of tea. Can be brewed with slightly higher water temperature compared to most green teas. Ensure each leaf is fully immersed and hydrated. It is not prone to bitterness or astringency. Brewing can be slightly more flexible; just maintain a clear, green liquor color. It remains fragrant for over four infusions.
